In the united Kingdom or Ireland, Shrove Tuesday is more commonly known as "Pancake day/Pancake Tuesday ", as it is customary to eat pan cakes.
In England, as part of community celebration, many towns held traditional Shorve Tuesday foot ball games, dating as far back as the 12th century.
On pancake day, "Pancake race" are held in villages and towns across the United Kingdom. The tradition is said to have originated when a housewife from the Olney was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her flying pan and pancake. It remains a relatively common festive tradition in the UK, particularly in England even today, is the pancake race whereby participants race through the streets whilst tossing pancakes into the air, catching them in the pan whilst running.
The most famous pancake race at Olney in Buckinghamshir, has been held since 1445. The contestants, traditionally women, carry a frying pan and race to the finishing line while tossing the pancakes as they go. The winner is the first to cross the line having tossed the pancake a certain number of times. Traditionally, when men want to participate, they must dress up as a housewife...


Ash Tuesday（灰の水曜日）は、キリスト教、カトリック教会を始めとする西方教会の典礼暦年の一つで、4節句の初日に当たります。イギリス、アイルランドで、その一日前の火曜日に、昔からキリスト教の伝統的な文化の一つとして受け継いで来たのが、今日にあたるShrove Tuesdayです。通称”パンケーキの日”とも呼ばれています。この日には各地でサッカーの試合が行われたりしますが、その日程は12世紀から変わる事無く続いているとか。
そして、一番の見物と言えばパンケーキレースです。
その起源はとても古く、その昔、Olneyに住むある主婦が、あまりにも忙しくパンケーキを焼いているうちに教会へ行く時間をすっかり忘れてしまい、教会のベルを聞いてはっと気がつき、あまり慌てたのでパンケーキをフライパンごと持って一目散に教会へ向かった事が始まりとされています。
1445年には、BuckinghamshirのOlneyで初めてレースが遂行され、以来イギリス全国に広まったそうです。
今日は、ロンドンでも各地でパンケーキレースが行われます。走りながら、フライパンのパンケーキを決められた数ひっくり返しながら走るという意外と難しそうなこのレース、男性も参加できますが、主婦に変装する男性も毎年いたり、最低でもエプロンは着用しないと参加できないとか。　

イギリスで言うパンケーキは、日本で言うところのクレープみたいなもの。日本でよく見かけるふんわりしたホットケーキは、アメリカンスタイル、てなとこでしょうか。
私はどっちも大好きだけどなぁ。

I watched the King's speech last night.
Since beginning, I enjoyed very much. During the film I can not stop thinking of what a courage this man had...

I can say, it was a great great film. (I wanted huge applause when film is finished.)
昨日の夜、久しぶりにトーマスと映画を観に行きました。
前から観たいと思っていたthe King's speech。上映中ずっと、実在したジョージ6世の勇気を思わずにはいられませんでした。

とても満足のいく、素晴らしい作品でした。（終わってから、思わず拍手したくなった程です）

sake seminar by Yoshida san from tedorigawa

Mr Yasuyuki Yoshida from Tedorigawa brewery visited London, and gave us a seminar and tasting for our staff.
Mr Yasuyuki is son of the Mr Ryuichi Yoshida president of Tedorigawa brewery in Ishikawa Prefecture. Mr Yasuyuki is now living in Brighton to study English. Asami from World sake imports is being the big sister of Mr Yasuyuki, she is correcting his English and give some advice for him to do seminar.
Bless Mr Yasuyuki, he was so nervous and really shocked with number of staffs at the seminar. Many staffs attended for seminar and we run out the handout and sake, but all staffs behaved really well and listen carefully what Mr Yasuyuki was talking.
After the seminar, Asami, Mr Yasuyuki and Asami's husband had lunch. The father of Mr Yasuyuki always gives us great support and help, so I wanted to return the favor to Mr Yasuyuki with some special experience at our restaurant. They stayed until last order, and I had a really good time serving them too.
先日、現在はブライトンに住む、手取川の息子さんの吉田泰之さんにお越し頂き、スタッフ向けにテイスティング＋セミナーをして頂きました。 いつもしっかり者のWorld sake inportsの麻微さんが、ビシバシと吉田さんの英語からセミナーの進め方までをチェック。さすが、本当に頼もしい限りの麻微さんです。
吉田さんはと言うと、かなり緊張しておられ、参加したスタッフの数も予想以上に多かったため、資料が間に合わなくなったり、お酒も足りなくなったりしましたが、スタッフはやはり造り手さんが実際にお話ししてくれるので、おとなしくじっと聞き入っていました。良かった。
セミナーとテイスティングが終わった後は、早速営業開始。麻微さん、吉田さん、そして麻微さんのご主人も合わせてお昼を召し上がって行かれました。吉田さんには、お父様の隆一様始め日頃大変お世話になっているので、その恩返しに心ばかりとデザートの盛り合わせをサービス。3時間半の長ーいランチ、この日は私も楽しく仕事が出来ました。
