Hi!
Hugo and I, we've arrived in Tokyo!

It was Hugo's first longest flight(12hrs), and Thomas was not flying with us... I was very worried about everything. But actually so many people helped me, understood us. 
I've been reserched "how to survive in long flight with your toddlers" on internet for a quite while, and I was so prepared of worst of the worst.  But just couple of times Hugo was cry really loud but it didn't last long. Phew!!

So this is the tools I took for this long flight...
Kindle fire with down loaded a lot of kids programs (but it was not charged... my hart pounded.)

Dinosaur book with a lot of magnetic dinosaurs 
Sticker book
His usual book that I read before he goes to bed everynight
My handmade photo book(pictures of all his favourite stuff, from cartoon charactors to animals and laptop...)
Little toys such as cars, tractors and trains...
Buiscuits, brioche, fruits. etc

One of my friend recomended to wrap a lot of toys and sweets, then when the kids behave well for 30 min, 1hr whatever that is, you can give one wrap of the treat to the kids as a reward. I thought this is great idea, but Hugo is too young for that so I didn't try in this time.

We both slept for 3 hrs during the 12hrs flight. But somehow, I felt it was faster than I ever thought.
We are suffering jet lag.  Waking up in the middle of the night then nodding our heads in the middle of the day, but so far we are enjoying!
Japan is facing rare massive cold wave that go through on top of the Japan once in several years. So it is cold in here. But I am so exciting to discover the town after 2 years stay apart.

ただいまでーす。
やっと日本に帰ってきました。
息子と二人、先日成田に到着しました。

ヒュウゴにとって12時間の長距離フライトは初めて、そして私はトーマスの居ない飛行は初めての経験。もう何もかもが心配でした。
が、皆さん本当に親切にしてくださって、色々な方に助けられて帰って来れました。
出発前から、もう長距離フライトの事を考えただけで心配で心配で、インターネットで"幼児との長距離フライトをサバイバルするには"をリサーチをしていたので、最悪の最悪な状況は大分覚悟していました。
でも、ヒュウゴが大泣きしたのは2回位、それも以外と直に泣き止んだので最悪は免れました。ホっ!!

色々な方の経験談をもとに、今回のフライトで私が持ち込んだ物。
 Kindle fire(子供用の番組をダウンロードして、しっかり準備して行ったのも関わらず、まさかの充電切れ!!心臓が止まるかと思いました…)

友人がおもちゃやお菓子を一つ一つラッピングして、30分や1時間、いい子に出来たらご褒美に一つ子供にあげる、と言う案を提案してくれましたが、ヒュウゴにはまだちょっと早いかなと思ったので今回は断念。でも、凄く良い考えですよね!

私もヒュウゴも機内で寝たのは3時間程。
それでも想像以上にあっという間のフライトでした。
今は2人そろってジェットラグ。夜中にぱちりと目が冴え、日中は頭がこっくりこっくりする程の睡魔。それでも、久しぶりの日本、楽しんでいます。
日本は今、数年に一度の大寒波が日本海側や東北を中心に深刻になっています。
私も、ロンドンの方が寒いと思っていただけに、正直びっくりする程の寒さ。でも、2年ぶりの 日本、楽しみまーす!!

windy village, smels of lavender

Hope many readers had good summer. 

We had very nice summer here in London. I think it was one of the longest summer I had for a very long time. (as i remember...)

But I've already pulled out my leather jacket to go out. It is so crazy, how quickly temperature drops... It's been grey and pouring down for all week. But as we had great summer, I can not complain!!

I had a wonderful holiday at Clansayes in South France with my sister-in-lows and her family.

We took a car from London to drove all the way down to Clansayes, as we had so much things to take for Hugo. It was our first family holiday and actually surprising us, how much stuff we need to take!! I told Thomas I feel like moving house.

Just for Hugo, we brought inflatable bathtub, travel cot and some toys that he always use, milk bottles, microwave sterilisation bags, formula milk, swim pants and swim nappies, wipes, clothes, sunglasses, car seat, more nappies, pram, medicines, bed sheets, thermometer and first aide set and so much more.. And it was good for us to take a car because as soon as start the engine, Hugo fall in asleep immediately and I could feed him without worry about place or time.

We've stop over at such a cute hotel in south of Champagne for one night.  

I've been told our villa will be middle of nowhere, from sister in-low. 

And it was actually in the middle of nowhere...But we had huge lavender field just behind our villa. 

Most of them were already harvested, but there is still some lavender flowers were blooming. When wind blows, I could smell lavenders.     

いつもブログを読んでくださってる皆さん、皆さんの夏はどうでしたか?
ロンドンでは今年はとても天候に恵まれ、今まで8年間過ごしたロンドンの夏の中でも一番暑くて、長かったのではないかなと思います。
でも、もう既に天気はグズグズ。かれこれ2、3週間程前からクローゼットからジャケットとスカーフを引っ張り出してこなければならない程。
こんなにも急に気温が下がるなんて、本当に信じられません。でも、今年は良い夏を過ごせただけに、なかなか文句ばかり言ってられないもの。

今年の夏、私達は南フランスにある Clansayesで、義姉家族と休暇を取りました。
今回、飛行機での旅行も考えたのですが、何よりヒュウゴの荷物が予想以上に多く、色々と自由も利くのと、運転の大好きなトーマスの事も考慮に入れ、ロンドンから車でドーバーを超え、Clansayesまで運転して行きました。
私達にとっては初めての家族3人旅行。一人、しかも4ヶ月の赤ちゃんが増えただけでこんなに荷物が増えるのかと本当にびっくりしました。思わず、トーマスに家ごとホリデーに行く気分とぼやきました。
 ヒュウゴの荷物だけでも、まず購入したのが inflatable bathtub, travel cot,そしていつも使っているおもちゃ、哺乳瓶、microwave sterilisation bags, 粉ミルク、水着と水泳用おむつ、お尻拭き、服、サングラス、チャイルドシート、またおむつ、乳母車、薬や救急用品、ベットカバー、体温計等々、その他諸々。
車で行って本当に良かったと思ったのは、ヒュウゴが車のエンジンがかかるや否や、催眠術でもかかったかのようにコテッと眠りに付き、そして お腹がすいて目が覚めた時も、場所や時間を気にせずにミルクをあげる事が出来た事です。

途中、Champagneにある、とても素敵なホテルで一泊しました。

目的地に着く前に、義姉からは、私達のvillaはとんでもない、周りになーんにも無い所に有るよと聞いていたのですが、着いてみてびっくり。本当に何も無かったけど、villaの裏手にはこの広大なラベンダー畑。既に殆どの花は刈り取られていましたが、それでも少し残った花からは良い匂いが漂い、そして風が吹くとラベンダーの香りが花をくすぐりました。

なんだか長居する場所じゃぁなさそうですね。

I loved it so much and I wish I could stay there for all day. 

The lady is selling Honey. I bought citrus honey and truffle honey and lavender honey for my mum. 

The citrus honey was gorgeous! I can use truffle honey for cooking. Drizzle it on top of the grilled pork would be delicious!!

そしてSt- Paul Trois Chateauxで開かれたマーケット。
とても楽しく、端っこから端まで時間をかけてじっくり見たら1日はかかるかも。この女性が売っているのは蜂蜜。試食させてもらい、とても気に入って購入したのがラベンダーハニー、レモン八二ー、そしてトリュフ入りの蜂蜜。ラベンダーの蜂蜜は母へのお土産に買いました。

レモンの蜂蜜はめちゃくちゃ美味しく、トリュフ入りのはローストポークなんかに塗って焼いたら美味しそう!!

Everything looks so fresh and tasty. 

I love those vegetables that different shapes and deep color. They have good attitude right? Those reminds me vegetables from my grand mother's garden....

もう全てが新鮮で美味しそう。
スーパーに並んで知るどれも同じ形の野菜より、こんな凸凹した野菜の方が私にとっては100倍も魅力的。どれも温か味のある、色の濃い野菜を見ていたら、祖母の庭でとれた野菜を思い出しました。

We've bought saucisson with roquefort and nuts inside. 

Both of them are so delicious!!

ここで購入したのがまず、roquefort入り、そしてナッツの沢山入ったソーセージ。
どちらもとても美味しかったー!

This is the place where we've stayed. 4 bedrooms, dining room and lounge are inside. 

There is a private swimming pool just in front of the house.

これが私達が滞在していたvilla.
ベッドルームは4部屋、そしてダイニングルーム、リビングルームがあり、外にはこのテラスとプライベートプールが有ります。

These are what we've bought from the market. 

I love those tomatoes. Different shapes, colors... some of them are sweeter than the  others. We had beautiful tomato salads almost every day.

帰って来てから、マーケットで購入した食材を早速冷蔵庫へ。
このトマト、形も色も違い、そして他の物より甘かったりと、目でもとても楽しめました。
そして毎日新鮮なトマトのサラダを思う存分食べました。 

Here is the old roman town, Vaison la Romaine.
There is a open air theater, Romain bridge and chateau...etc. It was definitely worth to visit. 
This vilage is more touristic but nice place to buy souvenirs, such as lavender products and soaps. We've walked around and found many pretty shops.

ここは古いローマンタウン、Vaison la Romaineです。
古いオープンエアーの劇場が有ったり、その他にも橋やお城を見物しました。
ここはさすがに観光名所となっているので、観光客も多く、お土産を売っている店も多いのですが、名物のラベンダーやオリーブのお土産を買うには最適な場所です。
私達もゆっくり見物して、かわいい石けん屋さんや小物屋さんを見つけました。

This river were over flooded few years ago. 

It is very difficult to imagine, from this calm small river.

この川は数年前、大雨で氾濫し、沢山の人が亡くなったそうです。
この穏やかな景色からは想像もできません。

If you are visiting here, make sure you have better shoes than flip flops. 

I didn't know how is it like, so I was wearing leather sandals which is not safe at all to climb up this slippery stone pavement. 

もし、ここを見学したいと思っている方、サンダルではなく、きちんとした靴を持参するのをお勧めします。

私達はこんな事になっていると知らず、私は皮のサンダル、そして他はビーチサンダルで来たのですが、この石畳、見かけによらずつるつるピカピカで、本当に危なかった…

At the flood, these houses and fields were under the water. Many people couldn't survive and many people lost everything...

But I'm so happy to see the recovery.This is truly amazing.

そしてこれがてっぺんからの眺め。
この一体が全て氾濫した川の水で覆われたそうです。
沢山の命が奪われ、また多くの人が全てを失ったそうです。
でも、ここまで復興した事を考えると、人間って本当に強いと思いました。

I love those little corner restaurants. Full of people in tiny street. 

こういう小さな隅の通りにあるごちゃごちゃしたレストラン、好きです。

5 minutes drive away from our villa, here is the lavender farm called l'essentiel de lavande.

They have a fantastic lavender products beside of this visitor space. The lady took us to the field and show us around. She also told us there is 3 different types of lavender in her field. I've tried to smell the samples of those pure oils and it was all different!!

I can not remember which one is which, but definitely one has touch of menthol or eucalyptus character, other has a hint of wax of orange skin, the third one was sweeter smell.... It was fascinating.

I've got a Beurre de karité à l'huile essentielle du domaine, its basically body butter, but this is so rich and smells BEAUTIFUL!!

私達の泊まっていたvillaからすぐ裏手に位置するのですが、車で5分程の所にあるラベンダーの畑を訪れました。その名も l'essentiel de lavande。

畑だけなのかと思っていたら、中には小さいですが見学出来る場所も有り、そして何よりラベンダーの商品いろいろ。とても良い匂い。

案内してくれた女性が、特別に私達を畑へ連れて行ってくれ、色々と話をしてくれました。

教えてもらうまで知らなかったのですが、ラベンダーって種類が有るんですって。そして、3種類のラベンダーのピュアオイルを嗅がせてくれました。どれがどれだったか忘れちゃったのですが、一つはメンソールやユーカリのようなスーっとした香りが強く、もう一つは柑橘系の皮の油っぽさ、そしてもう一つは他のと比べて甘い香り。意外な発見に驚きました。

私がお土産に購入したのは、Beurre de karité à l'huile essentielle du domaine、とてもリッチでとっても良い香りのボディーバターです。

What helps a lot for Hugo in this trip is evian's mineral spray. My sister in-low gave it to us and tried on Hugo when he seems very hot. Fresh water mist cools down his hot skin and he seemed loving it. I've never seen it in UK.  

今回の旅でとても役に立ったのが、このevian's mineral spray。義姉が買って来てくれた物なのですが、暑くてちょっとだるそうな時、ヒュウゴにプシュっとスプレーすると、冷たい霧状の水がとても気持ち良い様子。イギリスでは見た事無かったけど、売ってるのかな。

Here is the hotel we've stayed one night each Hostellerie La Montagne Restaurant Natali.

I loved it very much. Thomas has been there before for the launch party of new vintage Champagne and he wanted to return to this place with me.   

When we got there, unfortunately weather was not so great. We could have enjoy aperitif or night cap in the terrace, but it was too chilly to stay out side. 

They organized baby bed for Hugo and everybody so helpful for us with 4 months old baby... how sweet.  

The restaurant were excellent. We had dinner at both night(on the way to south France and returning to UK) and I've tried first ever deer in here. The my best dish was pumpkin soup with scallops and touch of vanilla. 

OMG. That was so good.

こちらのホテルは、途中の行き帰りに一泊ずつしたホテル，Hostellerie La Montagne Restaurant Natali。とても広大な敷地にかわいらしいホテルが何軒も建っていますが、ごちゃごちゃしてないのでゆっくり出来ます。牛がいたり、プラムの木が有ったりと、本当にまったり出来ます。
トーマスは、以前シャンペンのロンチディナーパーティーに招待されて泊まった事が有るのですが、その後このホテルの名前をすっかり忘れてしまい(←何でも忘れるタイプ)、今回偶然見つけてとても喜んでいました。
イギリスへの帰りに泊まった時にはあまり天気がよくなく、肌寒い程でした。つい4時間前までの天気とは大違い。天気さえ良ければ食前酒をテラスで頂きたかったのですが、あまりのどんよりに断念。
この時は4ヶ月だったヒュウゴの為に、皆さん本当に良くしてくださって感謝感謝です。

このホテルのレストランもとても素敵です。
滞在した2度(行きと帰り)、ここで夕食を頂きました。そして初めて鹿を食べました。バンビです、バンビ(涙)。多分最初で最後になると思います。
一番美味しくて、今でも記憶に残っているのが、カボチャのスープ。ホタテが入っていて、そしてほんのちょっとバニラの香りが広がり、本当に美味しかった。

So this is our first holiday in this year.
Hopefully we can have another holiday but many things are coming up all the time. I wish I could go back to Japan, but it will be in next year...;-(

これで今年はじめての休暇はおしまい。
次は日本に帰りたいけど、いろいろとタイミングが悪いので、もうしばらく無理かなぁ。

kikusui brewery

I was completely forgot to update this post!!

When I went to Japan last time, it was October 2012. 

I was under 3 months pregnant and I knew if I don't go back now, I wouldn't have time before giving birth and after birth for a while...

Usually my schedule is really tight in Japan. Not to see my friends and families, to visiting sake breweries and usually I don't have time to see my family and friends at all. 

But in this time, as I'm pregnant and still quite early stage, I wanted to take it very easy. 

I've chosen 2 sake breweries to see, one is called Kikusui Brewery located in Niigata prefecture, North west part of Japan.  

I used to drink a lot of their sake before I came to London. Especially Funaguchi was my favorite. And I've never been to Niigata prefecture, so I wanted to see.

すっかり忘れていました。

日本で見学させて頂いた、蔵のご紹介です。

最後に日本へ帰ったのは、昨年の10月。妊娠している事は解っていましたが、安定期の3ヶ月にはまだ満たなく、心配でもありましたがこれを逃したら絶対に帰れないと思い、思い切って帰国する事に。

いつも一時帰国をする時には、私のスケジュールはパンパン。友達に会ったり、家族と旅行に行ったりと言う予定ではなく、酒蔵見学の予定でギシギシ、なので帰国しても友人や家族と会えるのは本当にまれです。

でも、今回は妊娠と言う事もあり、無理をしないよう見学蔵を２社に絞りました。

そしてそのうちの一社が新潟にある菊水酒造。ロンドンに来る前は、菊水のふなぐち一番絞りを愛飲していて、いつかは見学してみたいと思っていた事と、新潟へはまだ訪れた事が無かったので、良い機会と思い今回の見学先に決めました。

When we arrived at the station, Mr Kikuchi came to pick us up. 

The first impression of brewery were so beautiful. It looked brand new, and a lot of space with massive window. The warm sunshine filtering through foliage and brings the soft light into the room. I loved it. 

After we've talked a little bit about London, our journey and their brewery we've visited the inside of brewery. In many years back, the brewery got damaged several times due to the flooding the river next the brewery. But they were never give up.   

So, this is the rice polishing machine (Seimai Ki in Japanese), Kikusui Brewery hold 6 machine.

Polishing rice up to 75%(means 25% will be removed, 75% is the remaining), would takes 8.5 hours.

For premium class sake such as Daiginjo, will be take 120-150 hours to polish up to 35%. And these machine polish 3,780t of rice. Can you believe it?!! 

最寄りの駅に着くと、菊地さんがお迎えに来てくださいました。

そして蔵に到着した私達。とても大きな門が印象的でした。木漏れ日が優しく、何とも言えないゆっくりした雰囲気。単純ですが、すでに癒される私達2人。

菊地さんと再会するのは、ロンドンで弊社のスタッフにトレーニングをして頂いて以来。ロンドンの話、ここまで来る道のり、そして菊水酒造の事等々話題が沢山です。一息ついてから、蔵の中を見学させて頂きました。

菊水酒造、昔は近くの川が度々氾濫し、蔵も何度も被害に遭ったそうです。

こちらが精米機。菊水酒造には6機の精米機がフルで作動しています。お米を75%まで磨くのに所要される時間は約8.5時間。大吟醸クラスの米の場合、35%まで磨くのに120−150時間はかかるそうです。そしてこの精米機、年間、3,780トンもの米を精米するそうです。凄い量!

こちらは磨いた後。心白もちゃんと見えますよー。

This machine above us, could remove faulty rice or little stones etc from the bag of rice. The probability is 97%! Amazing...

この、私達の頭上にある機械では、不作米、小石等を見分け、除去する機械で、その確率は97%だそうです。頼りになるー。

This is a skins of rice. Basically what removed from rice. It looks like white powder, and this is called Nuka. Kikusui brewery is sending this Nuka to Oil company, glue company and rice cracker company, not to be wasted. 

こちらがぬかの入った袋。菊水酒造では、ぬかを糊の業者、おかきやせんべいを作っている業者、そして油を造る業者等に送っているそうです。

Usually the steamed rice is transformed to the Koji making room to break down the starch to sugar by Koji mold. But with this machine, you can just sprinkle koji mold from this cup and rice is passing small pipe just under the cup catching a bit of Koji mold. Then the rice will be transfer to the other room through this pipe on the right side.... It was first time to see, and they can reduce the laborer down to 4-5 people. I was really like, WOW!! 

こちらは蒸し米機。そして下の写真は製麹機。よく観たり聞いたりするのが、蒸し米を麹室に運び、そこで麹米を作ると言うのですが、この機械は蒸し米機と製麹機が繋がっており、このカップに麹菌を注ぐと、蒸し上がった米がパイプを通る際にこの麹菌に触れ、そして右側にあるパイプを通して別の部屋に移動させる事が出来ると言う事です。この機械のお陰で、蒸し、そして麹造りの全ての作業を4-5人で出来てしまうそうです。

The fermenting tanks are maintained by those gadget. 20t of rice could fit in one tank and 6t of sake could be filled in this tank. 

And one point, they offered me a cup of fresh Funaguchi Ichiban Shibori, (my favorite!!!!). I shouldn't but how can I say no to Funaguchi. It was so good. I can still remember the taste... mmm... 

これらの発酵タンクは全てコンピューターで温度管理されています。このタンクには、20トンもの米が、そして酒にすると6トンの酒が収容可能だそうです。

そして、見学途中、ふなぐち一番搾りを試飲させて頂きました。飲むべきではないのは解っているのですが、これを前に飲めないとは口が裂けても言えませんでした。いまでもあのぴちぴちした味、思い出せます…。(イギリスでは、妊婦のタバコはだめでもお酒だったら一週間に一回ぐらいは少量飲んでも良いよと言われてます。)

This is behind the brewery is rice paddy. We went to see the rice that just harvested. It was beautiful.

蔵の裏手にある田んぼへ。刈り取ったばかりのお米が金色でとても奇麗でした。

This is the cellar. They store some sake every season and they are using them for research and studies. Inside were freezing cold!! (I thought my runny nose will be freeze) And photo below is one of the secret sake. What a cool bottle is this.

ここは菊水のセラー。毎年、出来た酒を貯蔵してリサーチや研究目的に使うそうです。鼻水が凍るかと思うくらいひんやりでした。そしてこの銀のボトル。素敵ー、そして気になるー。

I couldn't take nice photos, but we've been to other side of the brewery which is for experience sake making. They have a little house with hot spring spa inside for visitors to stay. 

You can make your own sake and also that sake could be selling at your store or restaurant. I think it is amazing project. You'll need a week at least though. I'd love to try one day.   

After we've shown the brewery, they took us to this gallery. They have massive collection of ceramics and wooden products. They were just amazing collections.

あまり良い写真を撮る事が出来なかったのですが、この後、蔵の反対側にある蔵にも案内して頂きました。こちらは酒造りの体験専用の蔵です。体験とは言っても、きちんとしていて、出来た酒は自分の飲食店、店頭(もしある方々は)で販売も出来ます。最低一週間は必要との事でしたが、温泉付きの宿泊出来る所も蔵内に有り、これはいつか是非とも挑戦してみたい。

  さて、じっくり蔵を見せて頂いた後は、こちらのギャラリーへ。酒器や器等、そのコレクションの数は本当に多く、素晴らしかったです。

And next room is the library. In this library holds so many books of sake and food. The wall were covered by SO many books. It was like a HEAVEN!!!

The Kikusui Brewery also provide cultural class, such as how to enjoy sake, how to wrap sake with Japanese cloth for a gift...etc. I really like their challenge.

そしてこの図書館はギャラリーに隣接しています。壁中の本棚には、食と、酒の書籍が山ほど。私にとっては、天国〜!!

菊水酒造では、一般の方々が参加出来るイベントが試行されています。その例の一つに、どうやって日本酒を楽しむ事が出来るか、手ぬぐいを使って日本酒のボトルをラッピングする方法を教えてくれたりと、とても楽しそうだなと思いました。そして、こういうチャレンジを常にされている事、素晴らしいです。

I've told Thomas, I want to live here. He said No...

And I've asked him this is what I want for next Christmas... He said No...

トーマス:だめだよ。

私:クリスマスにこの図書館が欲しい

トーマス:無理だね。

They store some more ceramics that doesn't fit in the gallery. I could stay there for a week at least. It was so much fun and I wanted to see everything one by one... And some of their old collection were lost by the flooding. What a shame.

そしてさらに奥にはギャラリーに収まりきらない器等がぎっしり。本当に、最低一週間はかけてじっくり見てみたいと本気で思いました。

こんなにあるコレクションですが、本来ならもっと有ったと言う事です。洪水で流されてしまった物も多いとか。残念。

In this trip, I had a lot to learn at the Kikusui Brewery. 

I always imagine, Kikusui is such a big manufacture company, but it was not so huge as I was imagine. And they are putting a lot of effort to make more people to understand their sake or not even their sake, the SAKE. That I found "wonderful". 

I'd like to see more what they will do and I'd like to support that as much as I can.

We had such an amazing trip to Niigata, I'd love to come back again.

今回の菊水への見学では、学ぶ事も多く、本当にためになりました。

今まで、私が抱いていた菊水酒造のイメージは、全部機械化されたぴかぴか大規模な造り手、だったのですが、実際はそうでもなかった事。そして一人でも多くの人に、彼らの、いや、“酒”を理解して楽しんでもらいたいと言う努力をされていること。素直に、“いいな”と思いました。

これから菊水が向う方向、そして造って行く作品、私に出来る事はそれを応援し、出来る限りのサポートをして行きたいと思います。

今回の見学で、バタバタして慌ただしい私達を、ご案内してくださった菊地さん、遠藤さん本当にありがとうございました。

最高に素敵な旅になりました。今度は冬にお邪魔したいです。本当に本当にありがとうございました。
