Chicago dream

 It was one of my dream to go to Chicago since I was little.

Because I used to play Trombone for 12 years and I always wanted to see real Blues in Chicago.

And my pen-pal friend lives in Illinois.

For me, Chicago is somewhere special and very far place from where I am.

Our friends James and Roslyn moved to Chicago in February,  so we decided to visit them. I was so excited to see our special friends and visiting Chicago and meet my pen-pal Beth, first time since 16 years!

First day, James and Roslyn took us for lunch at "The purple pig" which is sharing concept wine bar.

They do really good bone marrow, that I've never liked before. And very helpful staff were quite impressing.The restaurant were seems like always full.

One thing I extremely enjoyed were dessert. The doughnut look like dessert was so good!! I wish I could eat more of that.

シカゴに行くのは、小さい頃からの夢でもありました。

今では当たり前になった海外旅行も、私達の子供の頃は、まだまだ誰でも行けるような旅行ではなかったですよね。

シカゴに憧れを抱くようになったのは、９歳の時にトロンボーンを始めてから。
ブルースやジャズに興味が湧いたのは、だいぶ後でしたが…。
それから、海外に興味があって始めた文通がたまたまイリノイの出身の学生とだった為、と、なんだか意外な繋がりがあったので、いつかは行ってみたいと思っていたのですが、なんだか自分の居るところからは遥か彼方に感じていました。

トーマスと私は、今年の２月にロンドンからシカゴに移住した、友人のJames と Roslynを訪ね、シカゴへ行ってきました。
到着して皆で行ったのは、The purple pigという、アットホームなワインバー。
bone marrow（骨髄という意味）のお料理がとても美味しくて人気だとか。見た目の強烈さに、今まで避けていたのですが、こちらで渋々頂いたbone marrowにはびっくり。意外とイケルー。こちらのレストランはいつも混雑しているとか。スタッフもとっても親切で、好印象だし納得です。
ランチのハイライトはデザート。このドーナッツみたいな物がたまらなく美味しかったー。ドーナッツだけもっと食べたかったなぁ。

 We had the opportunity to see a baseball game at the stadium.

Chicago Cubs stadium is 5 minutes walk from James' house, so we were really lucky not to struggle with parking spaces.

We had a Chicago hot dogs, and ate monkey nut at the stadium.

I couldn't believe everybody throw nuts shells on the floor.... We had so much fun.そして、その夜、野球を見に行きました。

 Chicago Cubsの球場がJamesの家から歩いて５分程の近さだったため、駐車場なんかを心配しなくて済みました。

 シカゴホットドッグを頂き、ビールを飲みながらピーナッツを食べました。

皆さん、ピーナッツの殻、足下に山になるくらい捨ててこうやって食べるのが普通なんだとか。なんだかカルチャーショック。

This is the river which becomes green on St. Patric day.

こちらの川が、St. Patric dayに緑になるあの川です。

 We've been totally tourist.

But it was nice to discover and see different things.

So we visited the Sears tower (or Willis tower now) which has this glass box sticking out from the building.

I couldn't go farther than this... I'm not scared, just you know.... but not comfortable.

私達はもうすっかり観光客。
でも、たまにはこんなドキドキや、発見が良いですよね。
私達は、シカゴの観光名所でもある、スカイタワーへ。
このビルには、こんなスリルのあるグラスの床が突き出しています。
安全だとは分かっていてもやっぱり怖い。。。私はこれ以上前に進めませんでした。高所恐怖症という訳ではないけど、なんて言うか…あまり居心地が良くなかったです。

I've been drinking  Urban Wheat Ale 312 from Goose Island, all the time while we were in Chicago.
今回私がよく飲んだのは、Goose IslandのUrban Wheat Ale 312。

 Resting? or is it part of the act??

寝てるのか、仕事してるのか…。

 We had such an amazing dinner. This is one of the most popular steak house in Chicago.

I had fabulous king crab as starter, and rib eye steak...   

It is more like a "Brick" than "Steak" isn't it? But It was so good.

私達は、シカゴでも有名なステーキハウスで夕食を食べました。
こちらもいつもこんなににぎやか!!前菜にとっても大きい蟹を頂き、それだけで結構な量だったのにも関わらず、今度はステーキを。
とっても美味しかったのですが、”ステーキ”というよりなんだか”レンガ”みたいな大きさだった。

And this is the famous hot dog shop called Hot Dough's.

We queued for 45 minutes out side. And another 30mins inside. 1hr15mins to get a hot dog. Apparently this place is so busy like this all the times. Staff who took our order was so kind and seems happy to take time with each customers even 100 of people queuing out side a day.

My camera's battery ran out so I couldn't get any picture of actual hot dogs. But It was very unique and good hot dogs we had for lunch.
 こちらは有名なホットドッグの店。その名もHot Dough's。
私達は外で45分並び、やっとの事で店内に入れたと思ったら、また３０分の行列。
計１時間15分待ってやっとの事でオーダー。友人曰く、毎日こんなに行列しているとか。それなのにスタッフはとても親切で、お客さん一人一人に時間をかけてオーダーを取ってくれます。急がされずにオーダー出来るのも、ありがたい。きっと100人外で並んでいようが、このサービスは維持されるのでしょう。
そして、やっとホットドッグをゲット!!という時に、や〜ん!!カメラのバッテリーが切れてしまいました。ホットドッグの感想はと言うと、とてもユニークで美味しかったです。

 

And We had a dinner at Roka Akor restaurant in Chicago. It was brand new opened restaurant. 

Roka Akor (or Roka) is a Japanese Izakaya style restaurant and famous of Robata grill. 

There are few staffs who recognized us. Thank you!!
こちらはRoka Akorシカゴ店。オープンしたばかりの新しい支店です。
Roka Akorは、本店のRoka同様、素敵な炉端のキッチンで調理された新鮮なお料理で有名です。従業員の中には、以前ロンドンで一緒に働いた事のある顔ぶれも!! 懐かしー。

And my dream came true...

She is my special person. We were pen pal friend for 16 years. We never meet before and it was the first time ever we talked. 

When I was teenage girl, I was always dreamed about going abroad, and seeing different world. And she is the one show me many things through the letter. And I've promised myself one day when I grow up, I'll go to Illinois and see her.

It was a thrill and nervously excited experience to meet up with her. She drove for 2 hours in traffic to see us. 

I made my dream come true.

And I couldn't explain how happy I was.
そして、今回夢が一つ叶いました。
彼女が、とっても大切な友人です。私達は約16年程の文通仲間。今回が初対面!
私がまだ中学生の頃、海外を旅して、いろいろな人や物に出会う事を、本当に毎日毎日夢見ていました。そして、私は彼女からの手紙を通して、それを見る事が出来、いつか絶対彼女に会いに行こうと決めていました。
正直会う直前はちょっと緊張していて、かなりスリル。当日は2時間半かけて私達に会いにきてくれました。夢を一つかなえる事が出来き、本当に感無量。
どれだけハッピーだったかは、言葉では言い表せません。

And we celebrate our last night of Chicago at Bruce bar.
That's it, I could tick off everything on my list.

そして、シカゴ最後の夜をBruce barで。
そう、これで私のシカゴリストは全部 クリア。

It was exceptional. I was over the moon.

Everybody drunk quite a lot and Roslyn and I bought two CD.

We've meet great people and it was fantastic trip.  
かなり良いバンドで、私はウルウル。
皆すっごく飲んで、その勢いで私とRoslynは２枚もCD購入…。
今回はもの凄く素敵な出会いが沢山あった、思い出深い旅になりました。

boiled monkey nuts

I like eating and using nuts and seeds for cooking. But I am not big fan of eating nuts as it is...

One day I had to tell Thomas about boiled monkey nuts that I've eaten in Japan and I really enjoyed. 

But he didn't get what it is like, so I had to prove it how tasty boiled monkey nuts are. 

I've got a bag of monkey nuts to make something special.

香りや食感を楽しむのにも、料理にナッツ等をよく使います。

でも、ローストナッツをそのまま食べるのは正直あんまり得意では有りません。

先日、トーマスに、日本で食べた塩ゆで落花生の話をしました。

昔どこかの観光地で食べて、凄く美味しかった思い出を話したのですが、ナッツヲユデル？というのがまず理解できないらしい。

と、言う訳で塩ゆで落花生を作ってみる事に。

First, boiled the water in a big pot and add 1-2% salt of the water. 

Then add monkey nut in the boiled water. 

Then cook for 50 min. (check if it is soft enough.)

Drain the water and ready to eat!!

Texture is absolutely soft and slightly salty, it makes me addicted.

It is better to use fresh harvested monkey nuts, if possible.

まず、大きめの鍋にお湯を沸かし、お湯の量の1-2％の分量の塩を加えます。

お湯が沸いたら、落花生を鍋に入れ、50分ぐらい弱火でゆでます。（ゆで加減はざるに開ける前に確認してください）

茹で上がったらお湯を切って出来上がりです。

ほくほくした食感がたまりません。

出来れば、穫れたての新鮮な落花生が手に入れば、もう言う事なしです。

sake tasting night vol 5.

 It was our 5th sake event.

 Today, we had a tasting held at Matsuri St. James.

Akira san, who is working at Matsuri arranged the menu and set up our tasting. Thank you very much!!

今回で５回目を向える、日本酒の会。

本日は、祭　St. James店でお世話になりました。

祭のあきらさんが、今回の日本酒の会にあたり、メニュー等何から何まで手配してくださいました。頼もしい限りです!

あきらさん、ありがとうございました!

 To start, we had razor clams. It was really simple, but delicious.

We've tried 4 sake from Hasegawa saketen.

Some of them were really oxidized, and everybody thought it is not going to work well with anything....

But Akira san tried to warm it up.

The result was "wow!" it was so much better than having chilled. 

始めにマテ貝のバター焼きから。シンプルに塩こしょうで味付け。

そして４種の日本酒を頂きました。

内、何種かはかなり酸化が進んでいて、参加者一同、なんだか不安に…。

あきらさんが、お燗に付ける事を提案してくれ、温めて頂きました。

結果は、一同”おー!”、これならイケル。断然温めた方が美味しく頂けました。

So this is the answer...

Sake number one was

Sake number two was Biden. This is the one of the sake that was really oxidized...

そして今回のお酒はこちら。

一番、

二番、美田。こちらが今回飲んだ日本酒の中で、最も酸化の進んだお酒でした。

Number three was Hakugakusen. 

三番目は白岳仙。

Number four was Banshu Ikkon.

四番目は播州一献。

And we tried with beef. 

Mr Sudo who looked after our table today created special sauces for our tasting. 

It was really nice to try few different flavors. Special thanks, to Mr Sudo!!

本日、私達のお料理を担当してくださったのが須藤さん。

今回の日本酒の会の為に、５種類のステーキソースを用意してくださいました!とっても美味しく頂けました。須藤さんに感謝!!

Thom and I finally manage to get proper vacation since 2 years...

We were so looking forward to and I was so happy to be out side of busy London sometimes.

Our first hotel on our vacation was 40 minutes drive away from Athens airport...very quiet beautiful beach resort Grand Resort Lagonissi.

Calm beach was just in front of our room. We had such a lazy couple of days. Get up, eat, beach, sleep, read, swim, sleep, eat, sleep, swim, shower, sleep, eat, sleep.... I felt like wasting our precious time at the beginning but we couldn't do anything else since we were working really really long hour before our holiday. 

So it was nice to just stay as human vegetables.

トーマスと私は、2年ぶりのホリデーをギリシャで過ごしました。

本当に、今までホリーデーらしい休みをとる事が出来なかったので、久しぶりにいつも慌ただしいロンドンを離れる事をとても楽しみにしていました。

今回のホテルはアテネ空港から車で40分ぐらいのとても静かなビーチリゾート、Grand Resort Lagonissi.

静かなプライベートビーチが部屋のすぐ前に 広がります。

せっかくホリデーに来たというのにかなりのぐうたらぶりを発揮する私達。

始めの2日間は、とりあえず起きる、朝食、ビーチへ、寝る、ビーチで読書、少し泳ぎ、また寝る、何か食べて、また寝る、少し泳いで、部屋に戻りシャワー、昼寝、夕食、就寝。私は正直、せっかくの休暇を無駄にしているような気がして仕方なかったのですが、休暇に来る前日まで、心身共にかなり根詰めていた私達は何もする気になれず。

と、言う事ですっかり人間の有るべき姿に戻れた、というか、始めはそんな二日間でした。

 Local restaurant, XH. MA. 

The restaurant was packed when we went around 22:00. All staffs were really kind and full of energy. I loved this buzzy atmosphere!

ホテルの食事にもすっかり飽きたので、ホテルのスタッフのすすめでこの近辺をウロウロ。私達が着いた22:00ころ、レストランは満員。

小さな子供達も普通に公園で遊んでいます。

 スタッフの皆さんはとても親切でとってもエネルギッシュ!!こういう熱いレストラン、大好きです。

After 4days stayed in Grand resort Lagonissi, we've flew to very unique cultural island Santorini.

Santorini is famous of fresh seafood, beautiful architecture and wine. Santorini is a volcanic rock. Any beach wherever we've been there were mystically black sand.

4日間のGrand resort Lagonissiでの滞在の後は、Santoriniへ飛びました。

Santoriniは、新鮮な魚介と、素敵な建築物、そしてワインで有名です。

そしてSantoriniは、火山灰で出来た島です。と、言う訳なので岩は勿論、ビーチも真っ黒です。

Santoriniはとても素敵な町並みが有名で、歩いているだけでいろいろな物を発見できます。こちらは名物の白いナス。

This is one of the greatest restaurant we've been in Santorini. 

One of my colleague Kelvin recommended to go Selene. Location was so beautiful, we were enjoying sun set while having aperitif. 

同僚の、Kelvinが薦めてくれたSeleneです。きれいな眺めのレストランで、オレンジ色の夕焼けを見ながらカクテルを頂きました。

 We had an amazing dinner, with great service. 

All dishes were so beautifully presented and SO GOOD. I just want to come back to Santorini just to be able to visit Selene again.

お料理はとても素晴らしく、サービスもとても暖かみがありました。

このレストランに来る為に、Santoriniに戻りたいと思う程です。

 After such an amazing dinner last night, we wake up late and head off to the red beach. 

It is only beach where sand are not black. Very unique.

昨日の素晴らしい夕食とワインのせいか、ちょっと遅く起きてしまった私達。

早速有名なred beachへ。このビーチの砂だけは色が赤く、とても不思議な感じ。

 

We skipped swimming at the red beach. (getting too crowded...)

So we took our quad, then went to Boutari winery in south west of Island. 

だんだんと混んできたので、このread beachはとりあえずパス。

島の南西にある、 Boutari wineryへ。

We did few(10 types, just few...) tasting and some of the vintage were quite good. 

Lady from winery took her time to explain about vintages, process of wine which is really interesting. So after we left winery with couple of bottles of wine, we tried to visit field.

何種類かの（10種類程）試飲をさせてもらいました。

スタッフの女性の方が、とても詳しくビンテージの事や、製法について等、説明してくれました。とても興味深かったので、ワインを２本程購入した後、実際フィールドを見に行きました。 

 This is the vine tree in Santorini. Because of the strong wind and heat, tree can not stands like usual wine tree. So they spend several years to curve the branch. 

Grapes are growing in the basket-look-a-like branch. 

Rain is pouring probably 2 or 3 days in the year (I could not believe this!!) , so leaves on top of the grapes protect fruits from the direct sunshine and keep the humidity. 

It was really amazing things to see for us.

こちらが、Santoriniのワインの木です。強風と、強い日差しの為、ワインの木は通常のようには育てられないのが理由です。

何年かの年数をかけて、少しずつ枝を曲げて行きます。そして、ぶどうは枝で出来たカゴのようなものの中で育ちます。Santoriniの年間降水量はとても低く、一年に片手で数える程。なので、枝のカゴの上に覆いかぶさる葉が太陽の日差しをさえぎり、湿度を保ちます。

This place was so busy every night. It seemed like queuing outside is usual. 

Actually, there is few restaurant people queuing to get in, in Santorini. It is not common things in England. 

In Japan?.... we go only place where queuing outside!!

こちらは毎日表で行列ができる人気店です。

そういえば、Santoriniでは行列のできるレストラン、結構見かけます。

イギリスだったらあんまり無いけど。

日本だったら？…　行列のできるレストランにしか行きません!!

 After we left santorini, we took a boat to go to Mykonos. 

When we arrived at Mykonos, we were exhausted, thirsty and hungry.  

We went to one of our friends' restaurant Raya. 

It was so nice to see him. We had a very good night at Raya.

Santoriniの後は船に乗ってMykonosへ。

Mykonosに到着した頃にはすっかり疲れて、お腹もすいて喉もからから。

夕食に友人の働くレストラン、Rayaへ行きました。

久しぶりに友人に会えて、Rayaで素敵な夜を過ごしました。

  One of our favorite beach in Mykonos, the doughnut was so good especially when you are tired after swim. Sand in this island are not like Santorini. I could see little fish swimming with me!!

Mykonosでのお気に入りのビーチ、この至って普通のドーナッツは、泳ぎ疲れた身体には最高。ビーチの砂もSantoriniの真っ黒な砂とは全然違います。泳いでいると、小さな魚も一緒に泳いでいるのが見れました。

こうして、毎日、毎日夕日を眺めながら過ごしました。これこそホリデーですよね。

 The day before we go back to London, we've stayed in Athens.

Another great restaurant Spondi. Venue and all dishes were Beautiful. It was one of our vacation's highlight. 

ロンドンにいよいよ戻る、という前日、一晩だけ飛行機の都合もあってアテネに滞在しました。

アテネでたまたま見つけたミシュランレストランSpondi。

内装も、お料理もとても素晴らしかったです。今回の旅のハイライトになった程、思い出深い食事になりました。
